Politics – how to do nothing

Today New Zealand’s Prime Minister has announced a date of parliament’s elections 2020. We’re all excited. Yey… We are all going to go and vote between bad, worse and nothing. No matter what country you’re in, no matter of where you are – politics sucks. Here’s why.

To be a politician your entire life’s mission is to suck… sorry… convince a certain amount of people to like you. You don’t have to have any education, you don’t have to have any experience. All you have to do is be likeable. For that you can be a crook, you can be a comedian or you can be a professor of economics. No one cares, you’re all the same – the goal is to get votes.

The issue I have with politics is that you don’t vote for ideas. You vote for people. I already mentioned it in one of the blog posts – you don’t really have to fulfil your promises, you just need to be elected and then not do anything until next elections so people will vote for you again.

And since today the next election’s date has been announced – here’s my solution for the current politics. 3 rules that will change the democracy:

  1. In order to be a politician, you need to have a minimum of 10 years of experience working in the industry. I don’t care whether it’s Mc Donalds or the United Nations. You have to have life experience of real work, dealing with real problems and going through the same issues as an average citizen. (probably 50% of politicians with this rule would lose their job by now).
  2. To become a minister or work on any political cause, you need to have a minimum of 5 years of commercial experience in that field. You want to be Minister of Justice – you need to be a police officer, judge, a lawyer or similar in the past. You want to be a Prime Minister – you need to have a minimum of 5 years experience of management outside of politics, ideally on an executive position. At this point probably 90% of prime ministers would have to resign.
  3. Finally – during elections, you sign 10 goals of your campaign with 50% your wealth where each goal is worth 5% of your money. Do you own $200k? Each of your promises is worth now $10,000. If you don’t fulfil it by the end of your term, you have to pay it. At this point, we would have poor politicians worldwide.

I know I’m living in my tiny Utopian world but imagine how much better this world work. Imagine the world where politicians are honest, transparent and predictable. Maybe our first colony on Mars will allow us to introduce those “crazy” rules.
